Tarkan’s New Song ‘This Shall Pass’ will it be the Presidential Campaign Song?

Several politicians from the main opposition CHP, İYİ Party and HDP have posted social media messages drawing attention to the lyrics of the song. Pro-government media outlets have argued that the song was composed “on order”.

Shortly after Tarkan released his new song “Geççek” (This shall pass), it has become a trending topic on social media.

While it has been less than 24 hours since it came out, the video clip of the song has been clicked for over 2.5 million times.

While the video has scenes about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, several people have commented that the lyrics of the song have a political side to them. That being the case, several opposition politicians have posted social media messages about the song.

While the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), İYİ Party and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MPs and politicians have expressed their support, some people such as Murat Özer and Erem Şentürk from the pro-government media outlets Diriliş Postası and Not Haber alleged that the song was written and composed “on order” from the opposition.

Hacı Yakışıklı, the Ankara representative of pro-government Akit Newspaper, has argued that the lyrics were “written from Pennsylvania”, which refers to where Fethullah Gülen, the head of the Gülen community or the “FETÖ”, which is held responsible for the coup attempt in 2016, lives.

As for the ruling alliance, ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) İzmir MP Alpay Özalan has tweeted, “They have no projects or programs. They are consoled with a singer who has turned into a troll. An opposition with Tarkan its hope cannot even govern a henhouse. They unabashedly aspire to govern the state.” Referring to the lyrics of Tarkan’s “kiss kiss” song from the 90s, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Metin Özkan has argued that the HDP “prompted” Tarkan with the new song.
